“The Beauty of Fall in our Region”
Fall is a special time of year in our high-desert environment. Shadows get longer, mornings are cold and crisp, yet most days are full of warm delightful sun. Fall colors throughout the Truckee Meadows starts with aspen trees in the high elevation sierras, and trickle down to the valley floor by mid-October.

When do leaves typically fall in Northern Nevada?
Most deciduous (leafy trees that loose their leaves annually) in the Reno-Sparks area typically start falling about 1-week after the first frost or hard freeze. Some trees that color early, like Ash and Maples, can start losing leaves early, even before freezing temperatures. While our region’s high durinal (difference between high and low temperatures daily) temperature swings can make for a wide range of “first frost” dates, typically, the Reno-area is known for relatively short growing seasons that can end as early as mid-September, to as late as early November.
A good rule-of-thumb, is Halloween. October 31st tends to be a consistent date when most trees are starting to lose their leaves. By mid-November have completely lost their leaves.

We recommend the entire month of November. It is a good month for leaf cleanups, end of season mowing, last lawn mows, and dust and debris blowing from fall storms that have blown off leaves. Fences can get full of dead weeds, trash and debris, along with piled up organic matter.
By far, November is fall cleanup month.
